Baby Cries during feeds & Wind in Tummy
Posted by mysweetie (53 days ago)
My LO is 6 weeks and is consuming 4oz formula every 3 hours (sometime he would wake up prior to his 3 hours screaming for milk). The problem is once the bottle enters his mouth he'll start crying non-stop, so the majority of the time we end up dreamfeeding him.
I took him to the doctor's yesterday (as he was crying all morning) and was confirmed that LO has alot of wind in his tummy. We were given medication which seems to ease the pain alittle for him.
He has been using the same teat and milk formula since birth and we would also wind him.
Appreciate your valuable advise.

for his wind have u tried infacol and gripewater...my little one also got a lot of wind when she was around 3 weeks old and infacol helped her a lot. I would also give her gripewater if she was too colicky and i saw instant relief, she would in few mins pass a lot of wind and feel better.

that seems like an awful lot of formula for such a young baby...i think that was about what my girl had when she was 6 months, not 6 weeks.
how much is your baby gaining?
it may be that your baby is crying for another reason than hunger. babies will suck when something is put in their mouth, generally. it is a comfort reflex, not just a hunger reflex. it may be that your baby is not hungry, but looking for comfort and doesn't want so much milk.
have you tried just cuddling the baby instead of feeding him straight away?
if i recall feeding my first only about 2 oz of breast milk at a time at that age.

to amend my earlier post. my babies were both very small (less than 5.5lbs). that is probably why they didn't drink so much at once (but it still seems like an awful lot to me... it's 4oz x 8 feeds per day= 32 oz and that's what my younges drinks and she's almost 1.5 years old!).
i just found this on the internet...
"If your baby isn't eating any solids (as he shouldn't before 4 to 6 months of age), the general rule of thumb is to offer him 2.5 ounces of formula per pound of body weight each day. So if your baby weighs 6 pounds, you'll give him about 15 ounces of formula in a 24-hour period. If he weighs 10 pounds, he should drink 25 ounces in a 24-hour period. "

cara, thanks for your reply. since birth my LO has gained 2lbs which was said to be OK by the nurse at his 1 month checkup. when he cries we would do the basic i.e. check his nappy, give him cuddles, sing to him and even give him the dummy prior to feeding him.
my LO is able to complete the 4oz @ every feed, though i still have doubts as it takes him more than a hour to drink it.
i am also surprised in how much milk he is taking at such a young age, if memory serves me right my eldest son was on 2.5 - 3 oz of milk.

cara, i refer to my latest post.
"my LO is able to complete the 4oz @ every feed, though i still have doubts as it takes him more than a hour to drink it."
as he takes too long drinking during every feed - do you think its a good idea to reduce the amount of milk he takes or feed him every 4 hours instead.
also, where can i buy Infacol Wind Drops? A friend has recommended this to me but it was prescribed by her doctor. thanks

i think that you might be overfeeding him. he shouldn't take an hour to finish a feed. 20-30 minutes maximum.
i'd cut down the amount per feed, definitely, and see where that gets you. he might be fussing so much because he's full, not because he's hungry. especially if you are trying to feed him more.
infacol is available at watson's for sure and probaby mannings.
good luck!
(PS> my youngest went from bottom 2 % to 50% in 8 weeks. it took my older one almost 9 months to hit the 50% mark. now, at 1.5 yrs, my younger one is at 95%, so she likes to eat too! although, my younger one was exclusively bf until 6 months. and my older one was 50-50 until 6 months, when he went completely to formula.)

also try to feed him before the three hours, maybevery 2.5hours, so he's not too hungry and doesnt gulp milk, maybe a slow flow nipple might help as well.

hi,
on another point, i would just like to say that this is what happened with our son when he was born. at around 5-6 weeks he would start crying when he saw a bottle, which then developed into full blown crying and screaming. feeding him was hard and 4 ozs would take easily over an hour and the onl success we had was dreamfeeding him, but even then it was hard as he would wake up quite a lot as a result.
took him to two doctors who both said it was wind and dismissed us. but it didn't ge better despite changing bottles, using infacol, changing teats and even the milk.
finally took him to a third doctor who diagnosed suspected silent reflux and our son to some medication to treat it which changed him almost overnight.
so please, if you still suspect something is wrong, take your baby for another opinion. silent reflux is overlooked by many doctors but is extremely painful for the baby which would explain the crying.
incidentally, haven't been onthis threat for ages because for some reason my new apple pc isn't compatible with the website - every time i reply, the website rejects it!
