what to buy for the father-in-law?? (ok, boyfriend's dad) he doesn't live in hong kong and I don't already bought 'chinese' stuff in the past. wanted to buy a pen, but don't really want to spend more than 1000$, any suggestions? thanks a bunch!!
thanks for the quick replies. no he doesn't live in hk...lace, is "over hong kong" a picture book as I understand from your post? since i got stuff already for everyone else in the family except for the father, do you think this is a manly enough gift for a man? (sorry in a bit of panic here) thanks!!!
I would do a really nice gourmet hamper for his father together with lots of goodies and treats. They probably feel the same about receiving touristy/asian/ethnic junk as you do about buying it. Easy to order online and delivered direct.
Papyrus in IFC has a lot of leather bound note books. They look gorgeous. My 'father in law to be' lives in Beijing, so we got him a nice thick scarf and some leather gloves.
If he is a man he probably isn't expecting anything much.
Unless you know he wears aftershave, don't buy it.
If he is Chinese he will probably appreciate something practical, more than perhaps something trinket like.
The leather gloves mentioned above would be appreciated. But make them good quality. A tip on leather. Brown is usually much better quality, on larger items (jackets etc) it is always the better quality.
really appreciate all your replies.
in the end i found a pen store and got a nice pen with his name engraved. ok it's not mont blanc, it cost me less than $1000...but knowing he is not the show-offy type I think it should be ok cos I carefully chose a decent looking one. I hope he likes it!!
Leather gloves would have been a brillant idea, though!
